Async Communication
Definition
A work and communication style where messages, updates, and responses are exchanged without requiring all parties to be available at the same time, relying on tools like email, recorded video, and project management platforms.
Why it matters
Async communication protects deep work by reducing the tyranny of real-time availability. For remote teams and solo founders working with contractors across time zones, it is the default that enables productive collaboration without constant meetings.
Example
A founder and her freelance developer are in different time zones. They communicate exclusively through Loom video updates and Notion comments, moving projects forward without a single live call, saving hours of scheduling and context-switching each week.
