Category Design

Definition

A strategic approach where a founder does not compete in an existing category but creates and dominates a new one, making their brand synonymous with the problem they solve.

Why it matters

Category kings capture the majority of category economics. The brand that names and defines a new problem attracts outsized attention, valuation, and customer loyalty. Creating a new category removes the competition because no other company operates in the same mental space.

Example

Salesforce did not compete as a CRM software company. They created the cloud CRM category, renamed the enemy as on-premise software, and built the entire narrative around moving to the cloud. They became the category king and captured 20% market share while competitors fought over the rest.
