Cognitive Load
Definition
The total amount of mental effort being used in working memory at any given time. High cognitive load impairs decision-making, creativity, and focus; reducing it unlocks higher performance.
Why it matters
Founders operate in environments of constant complexity. Consciously managing cognitive load by simplifying decisions, organising information, and reducing task-switching protects the mental capacity needed for the highest-value thinking.
Example
A founder realises she starts each morning deciding what to work on, which emails to answer, and what to eat for lunch, all before 9am. She batch-cooks meals on Sunday, sets her weekly priorities on Monday morning, and follows a daily template, dramatically reducing morning cognitive load and entering focused work faster.
