Community Management
Definition
The ongoing practice of moderating, facilitating, and growing an online or offline community, including welcoming new members, sparking conversations, resolving conflicts, and maintaining a culture aligned with community values.
Why it matters
A community is only as valuable as its activity level and sense of safety. Poor management leads to ghosting, toxicity, and collapse of the network effects that make community a moat. Great management creates a self-sustaining culture that grows and retains members naturally.
Example
A founder hires a part-time community manager to handle her 2,000-member paid community. The manager runs weekly themed discussion threads, personally welcomes every new member, highlights member wins, and flags any negative dynamics early. Retention improves from 60% to 85% within six months of the hire.
