Competitive Intelligence

Definition

The systematic process of gathering, analysing, and applying information about competitors, market trends, and industry dynamics to inform strategic decisions.

Why it matters

Founders who understand their competitive landscape make better pricing, positioning, and product decisions. Competitive intelligence replaces guesswork with evidence and prevents being blindsided by competitor moves.

Example

A founder monitors her three main competitors monthly: tracking their pricing changes, new feature releases, job postings (which signal strategic direction), and customer reviews. When a competitor raises prices, she uses the intelligence to position her offer as the better-value alternative.
