Containerisation

Definition

A technology that packages an application and all its dependencies into a standardised unit called a container, ensuring it runs identically across any environment regardless of the underlying infrastructure.

Why it matters

Containerisation eliminates the classic "it works on my machine" problem. By packaging everything an application needs into a portable container, teams can deploy with confidence that production will behave exactly as development and testing did.

Example

A founder's development team packages her SaaS application in Docker containers. The application runs identically on any developer's laptop, on the CI/CD testing environment, and on the production server, eliminating environment-specific bugs and cutting deployment debugging time by 80%.
