Core Competency
Definition
The unique combination of skills, knowledge, and capabilities that gives a business a meaningful competitive advantage and is difficult for competitors to replicate.
Why it matters
Identifying your core competency helps you decide what to build in-house, what to outsource, and what to double down on. Businesses that lose sight of their core competency often dilute themselves into mediocrity.
Example
A founder builds a coaching business. Her core competency is not just coaching but her proprietary curriculum, her community model, and her personal brand. She protects these while outsourcing video editing and admin.
