Dark Social
Definition
The sharing of content through private channels such as direct messages, email, and chat apps that analytics tools cannot track, making it invisible in standard traffic reports.
Why it matters
A significant portion of referral traffic actually originates from dark social. Founders who only look at trackable sources underestimate how much their content spreads privately and may incorrectly cut campaigns that are working.
Example
A founder's blog post is widely shared in private WhatsApp groups and Slack channels. Her analytics show a surge in direct traffic she cannot attribute. That untrackable sharing is dark social driving real results.
