Differentiation
Definition
The specific way your product or brand is meaningfully different from every alternative a customer could choose instead, not just "better", but different in a way that matters to them.
Why it matters
Without real differentiation, you are forced to compete on price alone, which is a race to the bottom. Founders who can name their difference in one sentence find selling far easier.
Example
Two candle brands both sell soy candles. One differentiates on scent-matching to specific moods, the other on being hand-poured in small batches by a local maker. Same product, different reason to choose.
