Edge Computing
Definition
Processing data and running code as close as possible to the user geographically by distributing computation across a network of servers at the edge of the internet, rather than from a single centralised data centre.
Why it matters
Edge computing dramatically reduces latency for users who are geographically distant from a central server. For global applications, routing requests to the nearest edge location can reduce response times from hundreds to single-digit milliseconds.
Example
A founder deploys her personalisation logic to Vercel's edge network. A user in Singapore receives a personalised page generated at a nearby edge node in milliseconds, instead of waiting for a round trip to a server in London, creating a significantly better experience for her global audience.
