Email Subject Line
Definition
The first line of text recipients see before opening an email, one of the most important factors in determining whether the email gets opened or ignored.
Why it matters
If your subject line does not compel people to open, your email content is irrelevant. Average open rates are 20-30%; compelling subject lines can hit 50-60%+.
Example
"Weekly newsletter" → 18% open rate. "I made £30k from one email, here's the exact formula" → 52% open rate. Same content, different result purely from the subject line.
