Environment Variable
Definition
A setting stored outside your code, such as a password or key, that your app reads when it runs.
Why it matters
Environment variables keep secrets out of your code and let you change settings without rewriting the app.
Example
An app stores its payment key in an environment variable rather than hard-coding it.
