Event Tracking

Definition

The process of capturing and recording specific user actions within a product or website, such as button clicks, form submissions, feature usage, and page views, as discrete data events.

Why it matters

Without event tracking, your analytics only tell you that users visited. With event tracking, you know what they did, when they did it, how often, and in what sequence. Event data is the foundation of all meaningful product analysis.

Example

You add event tracking to your checkout flow: add to cart, begin checkout, enter shipping, enter payment, place order. Each becomes a measurable step. Drop-off between events tells you exactly where customers abandon and why.
