Feature Creep

Definition

The gradual, uncontrolled expansion of a product's features beyond its original scope, typically driven by customer requests, internal enthusiasm, or competitive pressure, often resulting in a bloated and less usable product.

Why it matters

Feature creep delays launches, complicates user experience, and drains development resources. The founders who ship great products resist the temptation to add everything and instead focus relentlessly on the core use case.

Example

A founder builds a simple booking tool. Over six months, she adds client management, invoicing, a marketing calendar, and team communication features. Users find it overwhelming and churn increases. She strips it back to its core strength and retention improves.
