First-Mover Advantage

Definition

The competitive benefit gained by being the first brand to enter a new market or category, creating brand recognition, customer loyalty, and scale before competitors arrive.

Why it matters

First movers can set the standard, lock in early customers, and build a moat before others catch up. However, being first also means educating the market at your own expense.

Example

Slack entered the team communication market early. By the time Microsoft Teams launched, Slack had millions of loyal users and a powerful brand.
