Free Trial

Definition

A period during which a new user can access a SaaS product at no charge, typically 7-30 days, before deciding whether to purchase a paid subscription.

Why it matters

Free trials reduce purchase friction by eliminating financial risk. The challenge is converting trial users to paid customers, which requires strong onboarding and clear value delivery.

Example

A SaaS tool offers a 14-day free trial. Users who complete the onboarding checklist within the first 3 days convert at 45%, versus 8% for those who do not.
