Grading
Definition
In fashion, the process of scaling a single sample size up and down into the full run of sizes while keeping the fit and proportions correct. A graded pattern gives the manufacturer the measurements for every size you plan to sell.
Why it matters
Poor grading is a common reason garments fit badly across sizes and get returned. Getting it right means a customer in any size receives the fit you designed.
Example
After perfecting a sample in one size, a brand pays a pattern grader to produce the full size range before the factory begins production.
