GTIN
Global Trade Item Number
Definition
A unique number that identifies a product worldwide, usually shown as the barcode on packaging. It is the standard code that retailers and marketplaces use to recognise a specific item and its variant.
Why it matters
Marketplaces such as Amazon, Google Shopping and many stockists require a valid GTIN before they will list a product. Getting them right means your listings match, your inventory tracks cleanly, and you avoid rejected or duplicated listings.
Example
A skincare brand buys a batch of GTINs for its new serum in three sizes, assigning one to each size so every retailer and marketplace lists the exact variant a customer orders.
