Headless Commerce

Definition

An e-commerce architecture that decouples the frontend presentation layer from the backend commerce engine, allowing the shopping experience to be delivered through any channel (web, app, kiosk, voice) powered by the same backend.

Why it matters

Headless commerce gives founders full design freedom and omnichannel flexibility. The backend handles inventory, orders, and payments while the frontend can be built however the brand demands, without the template constraints of traditional e-commerce platforms.

Example

A founder runs her product sales through a Shopify headless backend but builds a completely custom Next.js storefront for her website and a separate native mobile app, both powered by the same Shopify product catalogue and order management, creating a seamless brand experience across all channels.
