Hook Rate

Definition

The percentage of viewers who keep watching a video past the first few seconds, usually the first three. Hook Rate = Viewers who watched past 3 seconds / Total views.

Why it matters

The opening seconds decide whether a video succeeds. A weak hook means most people scroll away before your message lands, so improving the hook rate lifts everything downstream.

Example

A founder tests two intros for the same reel. The version opening with a bold question holds 60 percent of viewers past three seconds, while the slow intro holds only 30 percent.
