ICO

Information Commissioner's Office

Definition

The UK's independent authority set up to uphold information rights. Businesses that process personal data must register with the ICO annually.

Why it matters

If you collect email addresses, run a website, or store any customer data, you are legally required to register with the ICO. Failure results in fines up to £500.

Example

You run an e-commerce store that collects customer names and addresses. You must register with the ICO (costs £40-£60/year), have a Privacy Policy, and comply with GDPR.
