In-App Purchases
Definition
Transactions completed inside a mobile application, including buying virtual goods, unlocking premium features, subscribing to plans, or purchasing physical products through an app experience.
Why it matters
In-app purchases reduce friction by keeping the transaction inside the experience a user already trusts. For app-based businesses, they often represent the primary revenue mechanism.
Example
A fitness app founder offers a free plan but charges a monthly subscription unlocked through in-app purchase for advanced features. Most of her revenue comes from users converting through the app without ever visiting her website.
