Job to Be Done

Definition

A framework that describes a product or service in terms of the underlying progress a customer is trying to make in their life, rather than the features or category the product belongs to.

Why it matters

Understanding the job to be done reveals the true competition and the real motivations behind a purchase. Customers do not buy a productivity app; they hire it to feel in control of their day. This framing drives better product decisions and more resonant marketing.

Example

A founder selling a meal planning app realises customers are not hiring her app to plan meals. They are hiring it to remove the daily stress of answering "what's for dinner?" and feel like a capable, organised parent. This insight reshapes her entire messaging strategy.
