Load Testing

Definition

The practice of simulating high volumes of users or requests on a system to measure its performance, identify bottlenecks, and verify it can handle expected or peak traffic without failing.

Why it matters

A system that works perfectly for 100 users may collapse at 10,000. Load testing before a major launch or traffic spike prevents public failures that damage brand reputation and customer trust.

Example

A founder is about to run a live launch expected to drive 2,000 simultaneous users to her checkout page. Her team runs a load test simulating 3,000 concurrent users 48 hours before launch. The test reveals a database connection bottleneck that would have crashed checkout. They fix it before a single real customer is affected.
