Mental Models

Definition

Simplified frameworks and representations of how the world works, used to make sense of complex situations, anticipate consequences, and make better decisions with incomplete information.

Why it matters

A founder with a rich library of mental models thinks faster and makes fewer systematic errors than one reasoning from scratch each time. Models like compounding, second-order effects, and inversion provide shortcuts to clearer thinking.

Example

A founder applies the inversion mental model to her marketing problem. Instead of asking "how do I get more customers?" she asks "what would guarantee I lose all my customers?" The exercise surfaces four critical mistakes she is currently making, each of which she immediately corrects.
