Mentor

Definition

An experienced individual who provides guidance, knowledge, and support to someone less experienced, typically without commercial obligation, helping them navigate challenges and accelerate their development.

Why it matters

The right mentor can compress years of learning into months by sharing hard-won experience, making introductions, and helping a founder avoid the most expensive mistakes. Access to good mentorship is one of the strongest predictors of founder success.

Example

A first-time founder struggling with pricing connects with a mentor who built and sold a similar business. In three sessions, the mentor helps her identify she has been underpricing by 40% and introduces her to two potential investors from her network.
