Minimum Viable Audience
Definition
The smallest group of highly engaged people whose support is sufficient to sustain and grow a business or creative project, as opposed to chasing mass reach from the start.
Why it matters
Trying to appeal to everyone at the start leads to generic, forgettable positioning. Building for a minimum viable audience first creates a concentrated base of advocates who help you grow through referrals and feedback.
Example
A founder building a ceramics community decides to focus deeply on 200 serious ceramic artists rather than 2,000 casual hobbyists. Her tight niche creates stronger community, higher engagement, and better word of mouth.
