Mobile-First

Definition

A design and development approach where the mobile experience is designed before the desktop version. Ensures the product works well on the devices most users are actually on.

Why it matters

Over 60% of web traffic is mobile. Designing mobile-first forces prioritisation of the most important elements and prevents the common mistake of building a desktop site that's awkward on phones.

Example

A founder designs her landing page on a 375px mobile viewport first. Only after the mobile layout is perfect does she add breakpoints for tablet and desktop.
