Month-over-Month Growth
Definition
A metric expressing the percentage change in a key business variable from one month to the next, used to track short-term momentum and identify trends as they emerge.
Why it matters
Month-over-month growth is the heartbeat metric of an early-stage business. Consistent positive MoM growth compounds powerfully over time, and early detection of slowing growth allows founders to investigate and respond before it becomes a crisis.
Example
A founder tracks her email subscriber count month by month. She grows from 800 to 920 in month one (15% MoM) and from 920 to 1,012 in month two (10% MoM). The slowing rate prompts her to investigate and she discovers her primary lead magnet needs refreshing.
