Onboarding Friction
Definition
Any obstacle, confusion, or extra step that slows a new customer down as they start using your product or service, making it harder for them to reach value.
Why it matters
Every point of friction during onboarding causes some people to give up. Removing it lifts activation, retention, and revenue without spending a penny more on marketing.
Example
A founder notices many signups abandon during a long form, so she removes optional fields and lets people skip steps, and her completed signups jump significantly.
