Opt-In Rate

Definition

The percentage of visitors who provide their email address or other contact information in exchange for a lead magnet, newsletter, or gated resource, calculated as sign-ups divided by unique visitors.

Why it matters

Opt-in rate measures how effectively a landing page or lead magnet converts anonymous traffic into known contacts. Improving opt-in rate from 5% to 15% triples the value of every visitor without spending more on traffic acquisition.

Example

A founder's squeeze page receives 1,000 unique visitors and generates 80 email sign-ups, giving an opt-in rate of 8%. She tests a stronger headline and changes the lead magnet description. The next 1,000 visitors generate 190 sign-ups, an opt-in rate of 19%, more than doubling list growth without increasing ad spend.
