Option Exercise

Definition

The act of using stock options to actually buy the shares at the agreed strike price.

Why it matters

Exercising options turns a promise into real ownership, but it can require cash and create tax to plan for.

Example

An employee leaving the company chooses to exercise her options, paying 50p a share to own them outright.
