Owned Audience
Definition
A group of people you can reach directly at any time without depending on a third-party platform algorithm, typically through an email list, SMS list, or community you control.
Why it matters
Social media followers are rented audiences. Any algorithm change, account suspension, or platform decline can wipe out your reach overnight. An owned audience is a business asset that cannot be taken away.
Example
A founder with 50,000 Instagram followers and 5,000 email subscribers will reach far more people through her email list on launch day because she controls that channel completely, while only 1-3% of Instagram followers see any given post organically.
