Paywall

Definition

A digital barrier that restricts access to content or features unless the user pays, typically through a subscription, one-time purchase, or credit system.

Why it matters

A paywall converts free traffic into paying subscribers. The challenge is positioning the paywall at the right moment, after enough free value has been delivered to demonstrate quality and create desire for more.

Example

A founder publishes three free articles per week on her newsletter platform. Readers who want access to her archive of 200 articles, her templates library, and her weekly live Q&A must subscribe at £8 per month.
