Pirate Metrics
Acquisition Activation Retention Referral Revenue
Definition
A framework that tracks five key stages of the customer journey: Acquisition, Activation, Retention, Referral, and Revenue. The initials spell AARRR, hence the pirate nickname.
Why it matters
It gives founders a simple, complete map of where customers come from and where they drop off, so you can find the weakest stage and focus your efforts there.
Example
A founder maps her funnel using pirate metrics and discovers strong acquisition but weak activation, so she fixes her onboarding instead of spending more on ads.
