Retention Marketing
Definition
The strategies and campaigns focused on keeping existing customers engaged, satisfied, and purchasing repeatedly, prioritising lifetime value over single-transaction revenue.
Why it matters
Acquiring a new customer typically costs five to seven times more than retaining an existing one. Retention marketing compounds the return on every acquisition investment by extending the window of revenue each customer generates.
Example
A founder builds a post-purchase retention sequence: a welcome series, a 30-day check-in, an exclusive members-only offer at 90 days, and a birthday discount. Her average customer lifetime value increases by 60% within a year, without any increase in acquisition spend.
