Revenue

Definition

The total money your business takes in from sales before any costs are taken out. Sometimes called the top line.

Why it matters

Revenue shows demand, but on its own it does not tell you if you are making money. It is the starting point that costs and margin are measured against.

Example

You sell 100 guides at £50 each in a month, so your revenue is £5,000 before expenses.
