Secondary Sale

Definition

A sale of existing shares from one shareholder to another, rather than new shares issued by the company.

Why it matters

A secondary sale lets founders or early staff take some cash off the table before a full exit, without raising new money.

Example

A founder sells some of her shares to a new investor in a secondary sale, gaining personal cash early.
