Software Development Kit

Definition

A collection of pre-built tools, libraries, code samples, and documentation that developers use to build applications for a specific platform, service, or programming language more quickly and consistently.

Why it matters

SDKs dramatically reduce the time and complexity of integrating with external services. Instead of understanding every API endpoint, authentication flow, and error type, developers use the SDK's abstracted interface and get started in minutes.

Example

A founder wants her app to send SMS notifications. Instead of writing raw HTTP calls to the Twilio API herself, she installs the Twilio SDK, which provides simple functions like "sendMessage()" that handle authentication, formatting, and error handling automatically.
