Definition
A replica of your production environment used for testing before code goes live. Changes are deployed here first, verified by humans, then promoted to production.
Why it matters
A staging environment is the safety net between development and live users. It catches real-world issues (config differences, data migration problems) that tests miss.
Example
A founder reviews every new feature in staging before approving deployment to production. She tests on staging with real-looking data and a mobile device before giving the thumbs up.
