Stockout

Definition

When a product you sell is completely out of stock and unavailable for purchase, a missed sale that may permanently drive customers to a competitor.

Why it matters

Stockouts are invisible revenue losses. A customer who finds "out of stock" often does not wait. They buy from a competitor and may never return. Each stockout erodes brand trust.

Example

Your bestselling product sells out on a Thursday. You cannot restock until Tuesday. Your Friday to Monday website traffic peaks but has nothing to convert. Estimated lost revenue: £2,400.
