Time to Value

Definition

The time it takes for a new customer to experience the core benefit of your product. Shorter time to value correlates directly with higher activation and retention rates.

Why it matters

Every minute between signup and value delivered is a window for the user to leave. Great onboarding design obsesses over collapsing time to value to seconds or minutes rather than days.

Example

A project management tool reduces its onboarding from a 12 step setup wizard to a single template import. Time to value drops from 8 minutes to 90 seconds. Trial to paid conversion rises by 40%.
