Trademark

Definition

A legally registered symbol, word, phrase, or logo that identifies and distinguishes your brand and gives you exclusive rights to use it in a specific category.

Why it matters

Without a trademark, anyone can use your brand name. Trademarking protects years of brand equity and prevents competitors from legally copying your identity.

Example

You register your brand name as a trademark with the UK Intellectual Property Office (£170 online for one class). This prevents others from selling similar products under the same name in the UK.
