Value Proposition Canvas
Definition
A strategic tool that maps a customer profile (their jobs, pains, and gains) against a business's value map (its products, pain relievers, and gain creators) to ensure genuine product-market alignment.
Why it matters
The Value Proposition Canvas forces founders to deeply understand what customers actually want before building or marketing anything. It reveals misalignments between what a product offers and what customers actually need.
Example
A founder completes a Value Proposition Canvas for her bookkeeping software. She discovers customers most fear making tax errors and most want to feel financially confident rather than save time (her current positioning). She repositions around confidence and accuracy, dramatically improving her conversion rate.
