Vanity Metric

Definition

A number that looks impressive but does not help you make decisions or reflect real business health, such as total followers, page views, or app downloads in isolation.

Why it matters

Focusing on vanity metrics gives a false sense of progress. Founders who chase likes instead of revenue or retention can feel successful while the business quietly stalls.

Example

A founder celebrates hitting 50,000 followers but realises almost none of them buy. She shifts her attention to email signups and sales, which actually grow the business.
