Web Accessibility

Definition

Designing websites so they can be used by everyone, including people with disabilities, using screen readers, keyboard navigation, and meeting WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) standards.

Why it matters

Accessibility is both ethical and commercial. 1 in 5 UK people have a disability. An inaccessible site excludes potential customers and may expose you to legal liability under the Equality Act 2010.

Example

Accessible design: sufficient colour contrast (4.5:1 ratio), alt text on all images, keyboard-navigable menus, clear focus states. Tools like Lighthouse and WAVE can audit your site for free.
